A fraudster in Uganda is pretending to be connected to Church Action on Poverty. Please do not give them any personal details.
We have been made aware that people in Uganda are being approached via Twitter/X or WhatsApp by people claiming to work for a charity called We Care. Sometimes the person claims to be Rose Bradbury; sometimes they claim to be Father Stephen Pritchard, who is the parish priest of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Liverpool (see image above). Sometimes they claim that the charity We Care is based at the same church.
These people are claiming that they somehow work with Church Action on Poverty, and distributing forms which have our logo and charity number on them. They are asking people to share personal and financial details in order to participate in or work for an ‘orphan sponsorship scheme’.
Church Action on Poverty has no connection with these people, and has never been involved in an orphan sponsorship scheme. Our work takes place in the UK, and we have no connections of any kind in Uganda.
We have also spoken to Father Stephen Pritchard, who confirms that he has no connection with the person claiming to be him, nor with a charity called We Care. As far as we can tell, We Care does not exist.
If someone claims to be linked to Church Action on Poverty and asks for personal and financial details from you in relation to an orphan sponsorship scheme, DO NOT SHARE YOUR DETAILS, and please let us know on info@church-poverty.org.uk.
