A fraudster in Uganda is pretending to be connected to Church Action on Poverty. Please do not give them any personal details.
We have been made aware that people in Uganda are being approached by a user on Twitter/X who claims to be Father Stephen Pritchard, who is the parish priest of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Liverpool (see image above), or via WhatsApp by someone claiming to represent a charity called We Care, allegedly based at the same church.
This person is claiming that they work with Church Action on Poverty, and distributing forms which have our logo and charity number on them. They are asking people to share personal and financial details in order to participate in an ‘orphan sponsorship scheme’.
Church Action on Poverty has no connection with these people, and has never been involved in an orphan sponsorship scheme. Our work takes place in the UK, and we have no connections of any kind in Uganda.
We can find no evidence that We Care is a real charity or organisation. We have tried to contact Father Stephen Pritchard but he has not responded; we assume his identity is being used by a fraudster and he is not actually involved.
If someone claims to be linked to Church Action on Poverty and asks for personal and financial details from you in relation to an orphan sponsorship scheme, DO NOT SHARE YOUR DETAILS, and please let us know on info@church-poverty.org.uk.
