Creative workshops to build back better
Following a successful first series of online workshops we are back for a second series, for those with lived experience of poverty, activists and allies to learn new skills, unlock creative potential and explore different ways of amplifying stories from the grassroots to build back better.
Tuesday 6 October

Creating your own work during Challenge Poverty Week, Ellis Howard
Ellis will lead a fun, interactive session designed to unlock the imagination of budding artists and get them to throw insecurity out of the door, so they can create their own work. Over the course of the workshop, Ellis will lead a series of exercises that gets participants in touch with their authentic voice to help them figure out what makes them tick and how their creativity can serve the world at large. No experience is needed, just a willingness to jump in and see what happens!

Same Boat film premiere and Q&A, part of Challenge Poverty Week England & Wales
Join us for the premiere of The Same Boat, a short film written by Ellis Howard and directed by Brody Salmon inspired by the stories of those with lived experience of poverty during lockdown. Following the short screening there will be an opportunity to discuss both the writing and film making process, along with issues raised with Ellis, Brody, cast and crew. Bring popcorn!

Same Boat? book launch and open mic, part of Challenge Poverty Week England & Wales
Join us for the launch of the Same Boat? poetry anthology, poems on lockdown & poverty. An opportunity to hear from those who contributed to the book, both live performances & discussion around the themes raised, along with an open mic for anyone who wants to share their own poems, spoken word or music.

Getting your message across confidently, Ellis Howard
In this workshop we will be looking at how to structure messages, stories or speeches so that they have maximum impact. Come and learn how to channel your message so that your creative work has the deepest levels of creative and political resonance.

Artivism for Everybody, Matt Sowerby
Activist and spoken word poet Matt Sowerby will facilitate a practical workshop exploring ‘artivism’ – the political power of the artist to inspire, conserve or transform the world around them. Looking to history for inspiration, participants will explore how politics affects their lives, but also how they can affect politics. As the old feminist saying goes: The personal is political.

Live Collage, Lisa Howard
Lisa Howard and Clare Pettinger from Food Equality Project Plymouth will facilitate a collaborative online workshop using digital materials to explore how we can Build Back Better for Food Justice as we emerge from Covid-19. We will be working creatively with found digital materials: text, photos, audio and social media content. Please bring along something which helps to communicate what you would like to Build Back Better.
This follows on from a workshop in July where we explored the impact of Covid-19 food inequality, poverty and the food system.

A multidisciplinary workshop to celebrate the community we’ve created and visioning for 2021, featuring journaling, zine-making, digital scrapbooking and more. Followed by an optional online ‘Jacobs Join’ to celebrate the festive season together, with food, music and games!
